Confirmed res, no seat assignment question

Greetings all,

Former regular travel (like 20-25 years ago! - about 500K miles on various airlines, 300K on DL but now only fly once every year or two). Did a few searches but couldn't find any specific answer, so I thought I'd reach out to the current frequent travelers. If there's already something out there that addresses this, my apologies and I'd appreciate a link. My search skills lack, and sometimes the quantity of posts is overwhelming.

Recently booked a trip from CVG-STT. Got a U fare, I think just under the wire but not sure, booked it at 3 weeks out. One leg, the ATL-STT (June 7th, flt 571) I couldn't reserve seats.

Reservation says confirmed. Experimenting with booking another ticket (M and B available) shows several seats available, both coach preferred, and business class, none of which I can grab for my own U class reservation.

My question - how does this typically play out? Here's a couple of scenarios I'm guessing at.

Given the available seats in B, I'm thinking that some Medallion/status member may get upgraded and I get their coach seat.

The preferred seats become available at a late date? Maybe at check-in?

I'm planning to check daily, but wondered if anyone has advice on what to expect or when things might change. Since there are seats I'm assuming I won't be left sitting in ATL waiting for the next flight, but just trying to get a handle on the process.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!
